Your WhatsApp is a sales team. Treat it like one.

For most African businesses, WhatsApp is where enquiries arrive and deals are won or lost. Four habits that turn a busy chat list into a sales pipeline.

For most businesses in Kenya, the website, the Instagram ad and the poster on the wall all end in the same place: a WhatsApp chat. It's where customers ask the price, check if you deliver, and decide whether to buy.

Yet WhatsApp is often run like a personal phone. Replies come when someone has a moment. Chats get buried. Nobody knows how many enquiries came in last week, or how many turned into sales.

Speed wins the sale

A customer who messages you is often messaging your competitors too. Whoever answers clearly and quickly usually gets the order. A reply three hours later, or the next morning, often lands after the customer has already bought elsewhere.

Answering instantly around the clock is hard for a small team. Answering every enquiry, quickly, should be the goal anyway.

Four habits of businesses that sell well on WhatsApp

  1. Answer the common questions once, properly. Prices, delivery areas, opening hours and how to pay. Write the best possible answer to each and reuse it.
  2. Qualify before you quote. Ask what the customer needs, where they are and when they need it. A few questions up front save long back-and-forth later.
  3. Follow up. Many customers go quiet because they got busy, not because they said no. A polite follow-up the next day recovers a surprising number of sales.
  4. Keep your list. Customers who bought once are the easiest to sell to again. Send useful updates and offers, with their permission, and make opting out easy.

Where software helps

Notiva Messaging lets you send broadcasts and scheduled messages from your own WhatsApp numbers, from a dashboard or through an API. Pricing is flat, with no per-message fees, and you can pay by M-Pesa. For the email side of the same customers, Fika Messaging runs campaigns and automations.

Whatever tools you use, start with the habits. Your WhatsApp is already your busiest sales channel. Run it like one.
